Breakfast Reception for Japanesque Modern Committee

KLC News • 25 September, 2008

Our link with the Japanese Modern Committee is through our affiliate school in Japan, the Machida Academy, and we were very proud to have the opportunity to co-host this Reception and to showcase the work of the Committee.

The movement was founded in 2006 with government support, in response to the realisation that the traditional culture and arts and crafts of Japan were rapidly being eroded in the name of progress.  The membership of the Committee includes architects, interior and product designers and some of the most creative people in the country. Their aims, which are to use traditional values to enrich contemporary living and promote continuous industrial innovation, offer an example from which we all can benefit.  In a world of dwindling natural resources, there is much to be learnt from their use of indigenous materials and established traditions while still encouraging innovation and development

The Design Club provided the perfect venue for the UK and Japanese guests who very much enjoyed the presentations which were introduced by Helen Fifield the Managing Director of The Design Centre Chelsea Harbour and included an address by the Secretary General of the Japanesque Modern Committee and a brief talk from the highly talented architect Jun Michida featuring his new hotel extension in Kyoto supported by some exquisite film footage.

Sugar ‘n Spice provided a delicious breakfast, many good contacts were made and the guests were very appreciative of this opportunity for the international exchange of design ideas.
