Congratulations to Barrie Thompson whose garden was awarded a Large Gold at the Southport Flower Show. In May Barrie won the Student Garden Design Competition and he spent recent weeks implementing his garden design for the show. Barrie is a photographer who is currently studying on the Open Learning Diploma in Garden Design course.
The winning project for the Student Garden Design category was chosen because of its creativity and practically in terms of budget, timeframe and design. The theme for this year’s garden was Vintage and entries were received from garden design students all over the country. Some of the judges’ comments on the winning garden were;
‘Excellent presentation…realistic budgets & work schedule’
‘Strong lines and geometry’
‘Hard landscaping was really well considered and detailed’
When asked how he interpreted the vintage theme Barrie responded, “Vintage is subjective and relates too broad a topic to concentrate on one idea and I found inspiration from music, film, architecture, fashion and social revolution. Also vintage plays a huge part in the modern day and is more relevant today than it was 50 years ago. To design a contemporary garden was important or I'd have simply designed something old fashioned and not new at all.”
Updated images of Barries garden will be here soon. In the meantime some can bee seen here www.barriethompson.com.
