This action packed day designed primarily for Open Learning students but is still relevant for people who are wishing to redesign and improve their own home.
The course aims to build confidence in dealing with some of the projects tackled during the course but will also help non students with the mystique of house construction, surveying and drawing up plans.
The programme will include an overview of the basic principles of how a house is built and help you to understand why it is done in that way. For example, when and why did window sills appear, how do they function and when did internal staircases and chimneys become the norm? There will also be information on where to find help about house construction and what to look for. This will not be as dry as it sounds so don’t be put off!
A session on what to observe when visiting a property will be followed by a practical session on how to measure up a space and record those measurements onto a rough plan/survey sheet. The afternoon will be set aside for drawing up these surveys technically, using college equipment (drawing boards set squares scale rulers etc). The day will close with a chance to ask questions about the course and look at students’ work on these subjects.
The day will be run by Open learning tutors so it will be a chance to put faces to names when you use any of the support services.
The syllabus includes:-
- Building construction
- Creating a survey sheet
- Carrying out a survey
- Creating a rough measured plan
- Using technical equipment
- Drawing up a surveyed room
