Careers service

The Careers Department is headed by Marcy Brown, Careers Director and is intended to help our students find the right career route within the industry and successfully make the transition from course to workplace.

KLC have always turned out and continue to produce, industry equipped, competent graduates, pushing the boundaries of their students’ knowledge and skills. The quality of the teaching is supported by a superb careers service with a team skilled at matching the right graduate to the right design practice. The result has been a long and happy collaboration.

In preparation, a series of Career Workshops are included in the curriculum to give students an understanding of the breadth of the industry and the opportunities that are open to them. Professional designers, including alumni, and other industry contacts, contribute effectively to these sessions. Advice is also given on adapting CVs to a creative industry, how to research potential practices to approach and how to prepare for and handle an interview for a designer role.

In addition, one to one career advice sessions are organised and also work shadowing for all Diploma and degree students. Great care is taken with work shadowing to match the skills of a specific student to the requirements of a particular design practice and, it is significant, that the first job offers for each group are almost always as a direct result of work shadowing.

In order to be able to offer this service a great deal of work has been put into building up our contacts within the industry and, as part of this endeavour, visits to a wide range of design practices are undertaken by tutors and the careers team. These visits can open up opportunities for work experience, internships and permanent employment but also help to keep course content current and even provide a source of tutors, expert lecturers and projects.

KLC keeps in close contact with past students worldwide through the KLC Design Network and continues to offer on-going careers advice. Many graduates return after appropriate experience in practice to become tutors and established alumni with their own companies frequently offer current students work shadowing or employment opportunities.

Graduates are now employed by a range of prestigious companies (a list is available here) and employers return to us on a regular basis knowing that our students will have received a realistic and practical training for the design workplace.

To recruit KLC Graduates

Please contact Marcy Brown at careersservice@klc.co.uk with further information about the position and the careers team will make every effort to put forward suitable candidates. Great care will be taken to match the requirements of a particular practice but, if preferred, we can inform all students seeking employment of an available position and give them the option to contact the practice direct.

KLC Graduates with two or more years’ experience, looking to move up the career ladder, have access to the specialist expertise at Cobalt Recruitment.
